Amidst long-simmering tensions in the Middle East, news of a major relief has now emerged. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has ordered all of the country’s military units to cease attacks with immediate effect. This announcement was made through an official statement read out on Iran’s state-run broadcasting channel, IRIB. Following this decision, hopes are high that tensions in the region will subside to some extent.

Conflict Averted by Trump’s Initiative: Two-Week Ceasefire Between US and Iran

This development unfolded when US President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Notably, Trump made this announcement before his previously set deadline had expired. He revealed that this agreement was made possible through the mediation efforts of Pakistan. According to Trump, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir reached out to him and urged him to halt the major military action planned against Iran. However, a significant condition is attached to this ceasefire: the United States has stipulated that Iran must keep the Strait of Hormuz completely secure and open. This strait is one of the world’s most critical oil supply routes, through which vast quantities of crude oil are transported to various nations across the globe. Consequently, its security is considered to be of paramount importance to the global economy. In his announcement, Trump also mentioned that Iran has submitted a 10-point proposal, which the United States has accepted as a viable foundation for initiating negotiations. This implies that formal talks between the two nations could commence in the coming days, raising hopes for a resolution to the long-standing dispute.

Iran Hails Development as a Major Diplomatic Victory

On the other hand, Iran has portrayed this turn of events as a major diplomatic triumph. According to Iran’s state-run news agency, the country’s Supreme National Security Council issued a statement asserting that Iran has compelled the United States to accept its terms. Iran asserts that the acceptance of its 10-point plan is the result of its robust strategy and the pressure it exerted. This 10-point plan encompasses several significant demands. Foremost among these is the stipulation that the United States shall not launch any form of military attack against Iran in the future. Furthermore, Iran has insisted on maintaining its control over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has also demanded recognition of its right to enrich uranium as part of its nuclear program. Concurrently, it has set the condition that all primary and secondary economic sanctions imposed by the United States must be lifted. Iran has also called for several changes at the international level; specifically, it has demanded the rescission of past resolutions adopted by the United Nations Security Council, as well as the annulment of resolutions passed by the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency. All these demands are considered to be of paramount strategic and economic importance to Iran.

Currently, a two-week ceasefire has come into effect between the two nations, during which no military operations of any kind are to be undertaken. This period is regarded as crucial for both countries to pave the way for dialogue and reach a settlement. If these negotiations prove successful, it could not only lead to an improvement in relations between the United States and Iran but also mark a significant step toward fostering stability and peace throughout the entire Middle East region.
