Amid the ongoing tensions and conflict in West Asia, the Central Government of India has issued a clarification regarding reports of a possible shortage of LPG cylinders in the country. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has stated that there is no shortage of cooking gas in India and urged citizens not to panic or rush to book cylinders due to rumors circulating in several regions.

Rumors have led to increased panic booking; appeal to people: Avoid hasty bookings

According to Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the ministry, the domestic LPG supply chain across the country is functioning normally. Speaking on Wednesday, she said that consumers are receiving cylinder deliveries within an average of about 2.5 days after booking, which remains within the normal supply timeline. Government officials also highlighted that the central government has taken several precautionary measures to ensure uninterrupted supply. As a result of these steps, domestic LPG production in the country has increased by nearly 25 percent. The ministry emphasized that the national supply network remains stable and that LPG availability is adequate to meet current demand. However, officials acknowledged that in some areas there has been a sudden spike in bookings, largely driven by rumors and misinformation related to the geopolitical situation in West Asia. The ministry said that such panic booking has temporarily created pressure on local distribution systems in certain regions. Authorities have also received complaints of hoarding and attempts at black marketing by some individuals and intermediaries trying to take advantage of the situation. In response, the central government has instructed state governments to take strict action against anyone involved in hoarding LPG cylinders or engaging in illegal resale practices. The ministry has appealed to consumers across the country not to pay attention to rumors circulating on social media or through word of mouth. Officials stressed that the LPG supply cycle is currently functioning normally and there is no need for households to make urgent or multiple bookings.

A different picture in Ranchi, long lines at agencies and warehouses

Despite these assurances at the national level, the ground situation in some cities presents a different picture. In Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, many residents are reportedly facing difficulties in obtaining domestic LPG cylinders. Several areas in the city have witnessed long queues outside gas agencies as well as distribution warehouses. Residents say they are having to wait for hours to receive their cylinders. In many cases, consumers first stand in line at LPG agencies to verify bookings and then travel to warehouses, where they again wait in long queues to collect their cylinders. Another issue affecting consumers is the delivery authentication process. Many residents claim that those who do not have the required delivery authentication code are being denied cylinders, which has further increased frustration among customers already waiting for long periods. In some parts of the city, LPG cylinders are being distributed directly from large trucks parked along roadsides in an attempt to manage the crowd and speed up distribution. However, heavy rush and confusion at these temporary distribution points have occasionally led to arguments and chaotic scenes.

Restaurant owners’ concerns

Meanwhile, the supply disruption is also beginning to affect local businesses. Restaurant owners in Ranchi held a meeting on Wednesday to discuss the shortage of commercial LPG cylinders used for cooking in hotels and eateries. During the meeting, restaurant operators expressed concern about the sustainability of their businesses if commercial gas supply does not improve soon. Many said that restaurants depend heavily on a steady supply of LPG, and even short disruptions can severely impact daily operations. Restaurant owners warned that if the supply situation remains uncertain in the coming days, some establishments may be forced to temporarily shut down or limit their services. They urged authorities and distributors to ensure a steady supply of commercial cylinders so that restaurants can continue serving customers without interruption. Overall, while the central government maintains that LPG availability across the country is stable and sufficient, the situation on the ground in certain cities indicates that rumors, panic booking, and local distribution challenges are contributing to temporary difficulties for both households and businesses.
