Recent political developments in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu have once again heated up the country’s political atmosphere. On one hand, the shooting death of Chandranath Rath, the Personal Assistant (PA) to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari in West Bengal has sparked a political storm; on the other hand, in Tamil Nadu, the party founded by actor-turned-politician Vijay (TVK) has found itself embroiled in a crisis regarding the majority required to form a government. Although these two incidents occurred in different states, their political implications and consequences are likely to be felt far and wide.

Suvendu Adhikari’s PA, Chandranath Rath, Shot Multiple Times by Unidentified Assailants

The incident in West Bengal is being viewed with extreme gravity. On Wednesday night, unidentified assailants attacked Chandranath Rath in the Madhyamgram area of the North 24 Parganas district. According to reports, at approximately 10:30 PM, the attackers overtook his vehicle and fired multiple rounds at him. Chandranath Rath was immediately rushed to a medical center, initially on a makeshift stretcher and was subsequently admitted to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. The driver of the vehicle was also injured in the attack. Following the incident, an atmosphere of fear and tension gripped the entire locality, and a heavy police force was deployed in the area. Chandranath Rath was not merely a personal assistant; he also played an active role within the BJP’s organizational structure. During the Bhabanipur Assembly elections, he had shouldered significant responsibilities for Suvendu Adhikari at the grassroots level. Consequently, his murder is not being viewed merely as a routine criminal incident. BJP leaders have leveled direct political allegations in connection with this incident. The BJP claims that political violence in the state is on a continuous rise and that a specific political ideology is being aggressively propagated. A statement by BJP leader Yuvajyoti Tiwari further underscores the political instability surrounding this incident. He stated that while, on one hand, the BJP has consistently advocated for peace, on the other, the “Trinmool Congress culture” known for its association with violence has committed a grave error. This statement makes it evident that the BJP intends to portray this incident to the public as a politically motivated murder. The history of West Bengal bears witness to the fact that numerous incidents of violence and political clashes frequently occur here during elections. Against this backdrop, the current incident also raises serious questions regarding the state’s law and order situation.

TMC demanding a scientific investigation into the matter

On the other hand, TMC issued a late-night statement condemning the murder and demanding a scientific investigation into the matter. This move is being viewed as politically significant. Typically, an external inquiry is demanded; however, in this instance, the group itself has called for an examination of the evidence. By doing so, they aim to convey a clear message: that they have no involvement in this incident and are willing to cooperate with the investigation. Although the BJP is expressing full confidence in this stance, the actual outcome will only become apparent in the days to come. The repercussions of this entire incident will not be confined solely to North 24 Parganas. A political confrontation is already brewing between the BJP and the TMC in West Bengal. Against this backdrop, this murder could escalate into a major dispute between the two ashrams in the near future. It is anticipated that the BJP will attempt to take this issue to the public by linking it to broader concerns regarding law and order and political violence in the state, while TMC endeavors to mitigate political damage by refuting the allegations leveled against him.

The Challenge Facing TVK Regarding Government Formation in the Tamil Nadu Assembly

Meanwhile, the political landscape in Tamil Nadu is also witnessing intense upheaval. Actor Vijay’s party, the TVK, has stunned everyone with its spectacular performance in the Assembly elections. This marks the first time that Vijay has directly entered the political arena, and he has met with such resounding success. However, winning an election and forming a government are two distinct matters. Now, the greatest challenge facing Vijay is securing a majority. To form a government in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, the support of 118 MLAs is required; yet, the TVK currently holds only 107 seats. Since Vijay won the election from two constituencies and subsequently vacated one seat, the party’s tally of MLAs has decreased. The Congress party has pledged the support of its five MLAs, thereby raising the total count to 113. Despite this, five additional MLAs are still needed to reach the figure required for an absolute majority. This is precisely why the Governor has requested Vijay to submit a detailed list outlining the specifics of his full support base.

The events unfolding in these two states present two distinct facets of Indian politics. In West Bengal, a landscape characterized by political violence and a politics of mutual recrimination is evident; whereas in Tamil Nadu, the intricate arithmetic of power and the compulsions of coalition-building have come to the fore. On one hand, questions regarding security and law and order within a democratic framework are being raised; on the other, the political challenge of translating public support into political power is clearly visible. In the days to come, the politics of both these states will continue to remain a major subject of discussion at the national level.
