Jharkhand Governor and Chancellor of the state’s universities, Santosh Kumar Gangwar, has emphasized that there is a deep and sensitive connection between the environment and human health. He pointed out that in today’s times, rapid industrialization, urbanization, pollution, and changing lifestyles are creating new challenges for human health. International Conference in Jamshedpur Focuses on Pollution and Health The Governor was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of a three-day international conference organized by XLRI, Jamshedpur, under the guidance of Jamshedpur Co-operative College. The conference, hosted by the Environmental Mutagen Society of India (EMSI), focused on “Environmental Mutagenesis and Epigenomics in Relation to Human Health.” In his address, Shri Gangwar highlighted that pollution through air, water, soil, and food is having a negative impact on human health. He said this pollution is contributing to an increase in genetic disorders and other serious health problems. He stressed the need for scientific research and public awareness to tackle these challenges effectively. The Governor expressed hope that the conference would not just discuss problems but also provide practical and effective solutions. He urged scientists and researchers to ensure that their work is connected with the broader interests of society. He also said that conclusions from such conferences should be useful and applicable in real-life situations. Universities Should Address Societal Challenges As the Chancellor of Jharkhand’s universities, Shri Gangwar said that he is continuously working to improve the quality of higher education and promote research in the state. He expressed his desire for Jharkhand’s universities to become among the leading educational institutions in India, attracting students from across the country. He added that the role of universities today should not be limited to awarding degrees. Instead, universities should become centers for solving societal problems. He stressed that promoting research, innovation, and multidisciplinary studies is essential to find effective solutions to challenges related to the environment, health, and human welfare. India Moving Towards ‘Developed India @2047’, Young Researchers Urged to Work for Society The Governor said that under the leadership of the Prime Minister, India is moving towards the goal of “Developed India @2047.” Campaigns like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Namami Gange, and environmental protection initiatives show that development and environment go hand in hand and are not contradictory. He highlighted that Jharkhand is a state rich in natural resources, biodiversity, and young talent, with a centuries-old relationship between nature and humanity. Shri Gangwar urged young researchers and students to conduct research with curiosity, discipline, and social sensitivity. He expressed hope that the discussions during the three-day conference would prove to be highly significant from scientific, intellectual, and social perspectives.
