Emergency plans underway to evacuate tourists stranded in Sikkim amid heavy rains and landslides

In response to the growing crisis in Sikkim due to incessant rains and landslides, the evacuation of over 1,200 tourists stranded in Mangan district is set to begin from Monday, depending on favorable weather conditions. According to Chungthang SDM Kiran Thatal, both air and road transport options will be used in the operation to ensure the safe return of tourists.

The region has suffered extensive damage, with roads either broken or submerged in various parts of Mangan district, severely disrupting traffic. Reports suggest that Dikchu in East Sikkim has been particularly damaged, where several houses have been damaged and important roads have become inaccessible. Roads in Linggi-Payong in South Sikkim have been completely destroyed due to incessant rains, further adding to the plight of the region.

In addition, the water level of the Teesta River is constantly rising above dangerous levels, increasing the anxiety of nearby residents and posing challenges for the authorities.

In response to the crisis, the district administration has mobilized resources to accommodate stranded tourists, arranging temporary accommodation in hotels in Lachung and providing food at subsidized rates. Tourists have been encouraged to contact the Lachung Police Station for any assistance during this period of uncertainty.
