Opposition parties are preparing to bring a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. According to media reports, the opposition claims that the Speaker is not acting impartially while conducting the proceedings of the Lok Sabha. Because of this issue, Parliament has witnessed repeated disruptions over the past several days. The opposition alleges that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was not allowed to speak in the House, which they say goes against democratic traditions. Opposition leaders claim that the government and the Speaker are working together to silence opposition voices. Due to this growing dissatisfaction, the opposition is now considering a no-confidence motion against the Speaker.

Why was Rahul Gandhi stopped from speaking?

During the debate on the Motion of Thanks in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi referred to an unpublished memoir of former Army Chief M. M. Naravane and raised questions about the border issue with China. He claimed that Chinese tanks had entered the Doklam area. The government rejected these claims and called them incorrect. After this, the Speaker stopped Rahul Gandhi from continuing his speech. This led to strong protests from opposition members. Rahul Gandhi later said that stopping him from speaking on a sensitive issue like national security was a serious matter. The situation soon turned chaotic, with opposition MPs shouting slogans and throwing papers toward the Speaker’s chair. Following this, eight opposition MPs were suspended for the remainder of the session.

Speaker Om Birla’s response

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has defended his actions. He said that he personally stopped Prime Minister Narendra Modi from coming to the House on Wednesday. According to the Speaker, he had received information that some Congress MPs might create an unpleasant situation near the Prime Minister’s seat. He said that if the Prime Minister had come to the House and any incident had taken place, it would have been very unfortunate for democracy. Keeping security concerns in mind, the Prime Minister’s address was postponed. The Speaker’s statement has further increased the political tension. The opposition has described it as a serious issue and has questioned the Speaker’s neutrality. On the other hand, the ruling party says that the Speaker acted to protect the dignity and security of the House. For now, the stalemate in Parliament continues. All eyes are on whether the opposition will formally move a no-confidence motion against the Lok Sabha Speaker in the coming days.
